Here's a great chance for your students to practice adding and subtracting rational numbers (in decimal form) while evaluating expressions through the application of substitution.
Students are asked to solve addition and/or subtraction problems containing both positive and negative decimals. Upon completing the 3 x 3 grid, every row, column, and diagonal will add up to equal the same value. We call that number the "magic sum."
This 2 sided activity has one magic square on each side, for a total of 20 problems. The second magic square increases in difficulty. It will allow teachers to differentiate, as needed. By finding the "magic sum" students are able to self-check their work. Students requiring additional support can also be given the "magic sum" in advance so they can narrow down where errors may be located.
An answer key is also included!
