I teach in inclusive classrooms with special education students,
students in an early intervention program and proficient learners. This activity on “adding by using expanded form” was
created to motivate all students through differentiation. My goal in creating this activity was to promote rigor for my students. I have included very challenging cards such as breaking numbers down into expanded form to add and subtract and a concrete visual of base 10 blocks. I introduce this activity in a small group and then place it in a workshop center for independent practice.
An anchor chart is also provided. Hope you enjoy the activity!
