Common Core Standard: K.NBT.1 Compose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones and record the composition by an equation.
Purpose: This lesson is designed to reinforce your students’ ability to decompose and compose numbers from 11 to 19 into tens and ones. This lesson provides practice with counting the ones by counting up from ten. It is common for kindergarteners to revert back to counting the items inside a ten frame, even though they should know it is "ten". There are no items to count for the “ten ones”, so your learners will have to practice thinking of the “ten” as ten ones and not to count them by ones.
Students will say "Ten" to represent the eggs inside the basket, and count up by ones for each egg outside the basket. They will also use those numbers to complete the equation to show the composition of the number (11-19).
Picture cards can be used repeatedly for review.
This file contains a full lesson plan, the picture cards for practice and a worksheet for skill demonstration/evaluation.
