This number talk breaks down and scaffolds the entire process of using a number line to add up to a specific number (very beneficial for subtracting). It begins by helping students understand the connection between the ones place and how many to get to the next combination of 10. Then it moves into jumping from one combination of 10 to another. Next, it shows students how to move from a combination of 10 to the target number using the ones place as a clue. Finally, it puts the whole process together into one number line and shows students how to add up the jumps on the number line. This presentation is meant to broken apart across multiple lessons. It can be used as the core lesson in whole group, intervention with a small group of students, or a quick 10 minute daily number talk.
