Solving practical problems with adding and subtracting decimals can be fun with this project for animal lovers! Your students are given a budget and will shop online for a cat or a dog - they get to choose! "Happy Cat" is a project for cat lovers, while "Happy Pup" is the same project, tailored to dog lovers. Students complete similar tasks and calculations for the animal that they choose. They will need access to the internet to complete this project.
Students are given the job of shopping for food, toys, and other essential pet products. As they browse, they are responsible for examining the size, quality, and quantity of each product to fit the budget and requirements of the shopping list.
The first page outlines the directions and shopping guidelines for students. Each page following gives students space to record the necessary purchases as well as show their calculations. Throughout the project, students will be required to add decimals, subtract decimals, and round decimals (to the nearest dollar and to the nearest tenth).
This project is designed to print in gray scale for quick and easy copying. This can be used as a whole-class project, at a math center, or even given for homework. I like to use this as an ongoing activity for fast finishers. Students love getting to choose which pet they want to shop for! Through completing this project, students get a taste of what it's like to have the responsibility of a pet!
There's nothing better than seeing math in the real world. Give your students the opportunity to add, subtract, and round decimals in a meaningful way!
