Adding and Subtracting Decimals Lucky Duck Candy Bar Activity. This is a 9 page document that is intended to help your students add and subtract decimals in a creative and enjoyable way.
The opening scenario begins like this... "You and some friends have decided to take your chances in the “Annual Lucky Duck Contest”- an annual fundraising event held every year by the city of Lucky Duck to help offset some of the costs of the fireworks for the Fourth of July. Last year, Lucky Duck City raised $750,000. Wow, what a display that was!! You and your friends have pooled your money to buy some Lucky Duck candy bars. Each candy bar will cost $200 and will offer you the chance to win up to a $30,000 shopping spree. Everyone is guaranteed something, even if it is just a candy bar or a picture with Lucky Duck himself!"
For this activity, your students will need some fliers from some stores or ads from the newspaper. You will also need to purchase a bag of small candy bars and some aluminum foil.
The next step is to pass out a candy bar with the hidden reward wrapped inside to each student and have them open it up to reveal what they have won. Groups will then add up all of their money and purchase items for their shopping spree.
