Adding and Subtracting Decimals: Lucky Duck Candy Bar Activity
Common Core Mat Standards Met: Number Operations and Base Ten (decimals, place value)
This is a 6-page document that is intended to help your students add and subtract decimals in a creative and enjoyable way.
The opening scenario begins like this... "You and some other friends have decided take your chances in the "Annual Lucky Duck Contest". This is an annual fundraising event that is held every year by Lucky Duck City to help offset some of the costs of the fireworks for the Fourth of July. Last year, Lucky Duck City raised $750,000. Wow, what a display that was!! You and your friends have pooled your money to buy some Lucky Duck candy bars. Each candy bar will cost $200 and will offer you the chance to win up to a $30,000 shopping spree (or a picture with Lucky Duck himself)! Everyone is guaranteed something (even if it is just a candy bar)!!"
For this activity, your students will need some fliers from some stores or ads from the newspaper. You will also need to purchase a bag of small candy bars and some aluminum foil. You will need to carefully place a "Lucky Duck Buck" card (provided) on a candy bar and then wrap it with aluminum foil. Then, place a "Lucky Duck Candy Bar" label (provided)on the aluminum foil.
The next step is to pass out a candy bar to each student and have them open it up to reveal what they have won. Groups will then add up all of their money and purchase items for their shopping spree.
Everything is included in the packet except fliers, candy bars, and aluminum foil. The cards and candy bar labels are provided. Also included is a step-by-step teacher lesson page, a recording log for students to keep track of purchases, and a grading rubric.
