These fourth grade math lesson plans are the perfect way to get your students working on their addition and subtraction of fraction skills! Common core aligned means your students will get plenty of practice by utilizing the guided release of responsibility model.
▲What makes this product unique?
These lesson plans were written by myself using tried and tested lessons. Students will appreciate the natural pace of the lessons that allows them to use what they used in previous lessons to understand new material. My lesson plans include: focus wall content, full lesson plans, all required worksheets, a pre and post test, as well as center stations for the final day. Teachers will also appreciate the included answer keys. My lesson plans utilize the Guided Release of Responsibility (GRR) instructional framework. If you've never heard this framework, I have included an overview of how it works.
▲What is the Guided Release of Responsibility? (GRR)
In short, the guided release of responsibility is a framework that allows students the opportunity to take responsibility of their learning. The process consists of 4 steps (each step is represented daily in my plans) that gradually shift the lesson from being focused on the teacher (I do), to a guided portion of the lesson (we do together), to a collaborative activity (you do together), to a final independent piece (you do alone). My lessons include a very clear explanation of what you, as the teacher, will do in each portion of the lesson.
▲How many days of lessons are there?
This unit includes 17 days of lessons, with about 60 minutes per lesson. The first 16 days are instructional days, with the 17th day being a review/post test day. Please feel free to pace according to your students needs-some classes may need more than one day per lesson.
▲What standards are covered with these lessons?
This unit includes 4.NF.3a, 4.NF.3b, 4.NF.3c, and 4.NF.3d. standards. Each standard has a different length of time for focus-some standards require more instruction than others.
▲What do I need to supply in order to make this unit successful?
I have included all instructional materials, including a pre and post test. All materials required for centers are included, as well as all worksheets and collaborative activities. At times, you may need classroom manipulatives such as dice, dry erase markers, index cards or counters. These requirements are clearly identified in the plans.
▲Can I edit this document?
Portions of this document are editable. On every lesson plan, I have included space for you to type in your own notes/comments. You are unable to edit my text on any plans or worksheets. I have however enabled copying of the lesson plans, so that you can copy and paste into your own digital planbook if your district requires it.
▲What is included with my purchase?
You will receive a pdf file of my fraction unit. Included with your purchase is a brief introduction to the GRR model, as well as visual model of my focus wall. The actual unit includes two options for you. Option one, is one large PDF that includes every page of the unit (206 pages). All answer keys, lessons, worksheets, etc are in this document. If you'd rather work through on a day by day basis, I have also taken the exact file and broken it down by lesson. Therefore, for option two, you will have several files all labeled as "day one", "day two", "day three", etc. You will receive BOTH options with your purchase (412 pages in all)-so please feel free to use whichever one is more convenient for you!
▲What about my special education students?
As the needs of all students are incredibly difficult to plan for, you will need to modify accordingly based on their IEPs and other needs. I encourage you to modify the plans as needed. These are an excellent starting point, but by no means a 'be all, end all' way to teach fractions. Depending on student need, you may need to tweak the plans.
▲How much ink will this take?
This product is entirely in black and white (red is used on answer keys). There is no extra, or unnecessary clipart. Fourth graders are beginning to mature, and do not want (or need) pictures of random animals on their work. Included images could include (but are not limited to) math manipulatives required for solving, simple lined borders, charts required to solve, etc.
▲How much paper will this take?
If you do not wish to print the product in its entirety, lessons in general include one exit ticket to print (but often I have set these to allow two or four to print to a page) and one practice worksheet to be used per group or pairs. Some lessons do allow for additional pages to be printed, and other activities require less than two pages of printed student pages.
▲Do you have a sample of this product?
I understand how difficult it can be to make a purchase, particularly one that is curriculum based. I have uploaded a freebie that demonstrates a sample lesson from my place value unit. You can find it by clicking here. Please note, this freebie is meant to show you the lesson plan format, and get a feel for the product. You will not be receiving the focus wall materials, pre test/post test, or answer keys.
▲I love these lesson plans, do you have any more or a bundle?
My goal is to continue to create these products. In order to create quality products and plans, it takes a lengthy amount of time. I do not have a set schedule for release, nor do I know what plans I will be creating next. I highly recommend following my store to be notified of when the next set releases. Lesson plans, like all of my products, will be on sale when they first release!
Don’t forget to leave feedback for this product! Doing so earns credits for future TPT products! Please Note: You are UNABLE to edit the text in this document. I have set the document to allow for you to copy and paste the text from the document, and have included space on each page of plans for you to add in your own notes and comments. If you have a question about what is or is not editable, please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org, or through the “Ask a Question” feature on TeachersPayTeachers. I will be unable to issue a refund or make custom changes on this product!
