Product Description

This color-by-number activity is a fun way for your students to practice an important skill while still having them practice important math skills!

This file contains a Christmas/winter-themed color-coding activity, requiring students to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

The winter scene is divided into sections, each with a fraction problem to solve. Students solve a problem and color the section the shade that corresponds to their answer, using the provided legend.

There are 26 problems, some that result in a sum or difference that needs to be simplified or rewritten as a mixed number.

A few subtraction problems require borrowing (or rewriting the problem as improper fractions).

An answer key is provided in the form of a completed sheet showing the sections colored the correct shade.

After students initially learn how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers, this activity can be used as independent practice, skill reinforcement, or even as an alternative assessment. It can also be used as an assignment when you have a substitute teacher for the day.

Providing students a fun way to practice a foundational skill will surely increase student motivation and eventually their mastery of that skill. The answer keys provided allow you to do a quick check by using the completed color page to check students’ work or to do a more detailed assessment by checking individual problems with the problem sheet answer key. The problems page leaves plenty of room for students to show their work or for you to make corrections when assessing.

A Tip From My Classroom
When using this activity as independent practice in my own classroom, I have students work on completing the problems page while I walk around placing checkmarks on individual correct problems. I advise them not to begin coloring a section until I have checked the related problem for that section. This ensures that students do not color sections incorrectly, requiring a new color sheet. More importantly, it also allows for formative assessment and creates opportunities for individual help.
