Strong number sense includes a deep understanding of fraction concepts and is important for students to be successful when computing with fractions. Students develop an understanding of fractions at different rates.
This task recognizes that some students are ready to move to the more abstract stage of computation with fractions while others still need concrete representations to develop the ability to compute with fractions.
Included in the task is a pre-assessment that will be used to group students based on readiness and three tasks that attend to their readiness level. Visual models are provided for students who struggle with abstract thinking.
