These addition and subtraction of fractions task cards contain both proper and improper fractions, mixed numbers, denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions Task Cards (Addition and Subtraction of Fractions) contain 48 different cards for Grade 5 based on the Common Core State Standards (5.NF.A.1). A Title card, a Common Core Standards card, a detailed explanation of segment strands of the task card set, and an Answers card are also included if you choose to make them part of a deck. A full size page of answers are included to use in a learning center along with 2 choices for student answer sheets. The cards can also be used at the end of Grade 4 or as a review in the beginning of Grade 6.

Adding and Subtracting Fractions help students practice their skills to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd.)

This task card set can be used in segments or as a complete set. The following descriptions describe how the task card set can be separated based on certain types of problems to develop specific skill sets as needed.

All odd-numbered cards include addition of fractions with unlike denominators.

All even-numbered cards include subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.

Task Cards 1-16 include addition and subtraction with proper fractions using unlike denominators.

Task Cards 1-8 do not require students to reduce a final answer while Task Cards 9-16 will require reducing if using the a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd method instead of a LCM for the denominator.

Task Cards 17-32 include addition and subtraction including proper and improper fractions using unlike denominators.

Task Cards 17-24 do not require students to reduce a final answer while Task Cards 25-32 will require reducing if using the a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd method instead of a LCM for the denominator.

Task Cards 33-48 include addition and subtraction with mixed numbers where fractions have unlike denominators.

Task Cards 33-40 do not require students to reduce a final answer while Task Cards 41-48 will require reducing of some problems if using the a/b + c/d = (ad + bc)/bd method instead of a LCM for the denominator. Problems containing whole number were also used in this segment of cards.

These task cards can be used in learning centers, for independent review, or in a game setting. The cards can be printed in color or grayscale. For long term use, you will want to laminate the cards first or insert them into the pages of a small 4x6 photo album where students can write their answers directly on each page with a dry erase marker.
