This is a one-page tool to help kids learn how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. When using with students, I made copies front/back, and I also laminated a copy and let them use dry-erase markers on it for small group work.

How to use:
1. Write an addition or subtraction fractions problem to the top left boxes, and the bottom left boxes (the large box is for a whole number if the problem involves mixed fractions.
4. Identify LCM, and multiply numerator and denominator by the LCM (middle boxes).
5. Write new (equivalent) fractions in the top right and bottom right boxes.
6. Add fractions or subtrac new equivalent fractions
Log in to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘒/𝘣 + 𝘀/π˜₯ = (𝘒π˜₯ + 𝘣𝘀)/𝘣π˜₯.)
