Description
Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators using the Four-Square Method
When I first started teaching adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators to my fifth graders about 14 years ago, I quickly realized that they needed some concrete step-by-step directions. They also needed a way to organize their work. I racked my brain for a little while before coming up with this graphic organizer. My students loved it!
When we moved to multiplying and dividing fractions, they never again confused the steps. They simply responded with, “adding and subtracting – we use 4-square!”
I still use this method with my fifth graders and found SO MUCH success with it over the years!
