OH MY GOODNESS!! How have I never heard of the four square method before!? This resource is FABULOUS and has helped my students so much!
So happy to find something that fits with how I want to teach this concept. I like the broken down steps instead of trying to have students immediately be able to add or subtract the fractions!

Description

Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators using the Four-Square Method

When I first started teaching adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators to my fifth graders about 14 years ago, I quickly realized that they needed some concrete step-by-step directions. They also needed a way to organize their work. I racked my brain for a little while before coming up with this graphic organizer. My students loved it!

When we moved to multiplying and dividing fractions, they never again confused the steps. They simply responded with, “adding and subtracting – we use 4-square!”

I still use this method with my fifth graders and found SO MUCH success with it over the years!

This bundle includes:

1. PowerPoint Lesson with Teacher Notes
2. Interactive Notes: Students can use these as a graphic organizer while you teach with the PowerPoint Lesson
3. Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Models Practice (2 pages)
4. Adding and Subtracting Fractions with Four-Square Practice (8 pages)

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
