Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators requires many steps. Especially when your answer comes out to be improper or not in its simplest form. For some students, these steps come easily but for some students, particularly the ones I work with, it doesn’t. They may be able to interpret the model and tell in a word problem what they are supposed to do, but then all of the steps to get the answer become too much.
So, I have created a graphic organizer that we call the “shape model” that helps students organize the process of getting common denominators. There is also another graphic organizer to help them simplify the fraction when needed as well. These are in my store for free- but I have also included them in the download since they relate so closely to this standard.
Along with the graphic organizers, there are 24 task cards which are a mixture of: word problems, interpreting models, shading models, interpreting number lines- all open ended questions. *Some answers will need to be simplified and others will need to be changed from improper fractions to mixed numbers.
You can use this download as task cards, cutting each problem out and using the included answer recording sheet. I also use these as homework for my special education students during the unit- printing out one or two full sheets per night. You can even use them as an assessment, quick check, spiral ticket out the door, play SCOOT the options are endless. Answer documents are included for teacher quick check or student self-check.
