This 5E Integer Lesson takes the students through each type of addition and subtraction problem using a number line and counting curves. This is a great lesson for understanding what really happens when positive and negative numbers are being combined. Included is a PDF with worksheets and task cards and a PowerPoint with notes, demonstrations and answer keys.
5E Lesson Plan: (90 – 120 minutes)
*Engage: Have students list the numbers on page 1 of the PowerPoint in order from least to greatest.
*Explore: Print page 3 (PDF) for all your students. This page will be used by the students to cut out the number line and number curves. (This can be taped into their interactive notebook when they are finished.) The PowerPoint follows the PDF, so look at both documents before starting the lesson. If you like to save paper, the students can follow the PowerPoint and copy the problems as they go in their notebook. If you would rather have the copies of these problems ready to go, then print pages 5 – 9 from the PDF. The PowerPoint will give examples of each type of problem and show the students how to use the number curves to find the answers. Since it is editable, you may want to change it slightly to fit your needs or to fit your vocabulary. Let your early finishers, help those that struggle if you trust them.
*Explain: After each type of problem is practiced, there is an answer key. Let students check their work. Have the students give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down after they look at their answers. If you see a lot of thumbs down, then you will need to go over that type of problem in more detail.
*Elaborate: Use the task cards to deepen understanding. Cut out a set of task cards for each pair of students. They can use their number line as needed. Answer key provided on PDF and PPT.
*Evaluate: Final Notes…Have the students fill in the chart at the end of the PDF and tape into their notes. Key provided on both the PDF and PPT.
