These lecture notes are ideal for students who have trouble understanding the traditional "number line" method for adding and subtracting integers. My students have nicknamed it the "Pancake Stack Method" so that is what I call it in these notes. I came up with this method when I was working with a class that had a high population of ESL students, and they were having a lot of trouble understanding the whole number line idea.
These notes can be photocopied and made into guided notes for the students while the answer key is provided for teacher use, or to be made into an overhead.
Practice problems are included within this lesson. And extension lesson is also included, but not intended to be taught on the same day as the prior part of the lesson.
Again, this really helped my students who were struggling understand (all of the students who were struggling understood by the end of the next class period--so I figured this would be a great lesson to share with others! Let me know what you think of it!)
Enjoy! The best part is--no manipulatives are needed!
