This graphic organizer is intended to help students understand the direction they need to move on the number line when working with integers. I use the following rules to teach integer operations to my students. I have found this to the the most successful method of any I have tried.
The first number in an integer problem always tells you where to start on the number line.
Addition (+) always means MOVE TO THE RIGHT on the number line.
Subtraction (-) always means MOVE TO THE LEFT on the number line.
A negative sign means turn and GO IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
