Included in this activity are two versions of the plus and minus counters: one in color and one in black-and-white. Feel free to print the black-and-white version and use markers or colored pencils to add color to the signs if you want to save on printer ink (or if you enjoy coloring!). Then cut along the dotted lines. You can also laminate them to make them hold up longer.
The workboard consists of a place to write the equation at the top, three columns to represent the two given numbers and the solution, and a number line. Laminate the workboard and allow students to use a dry-erase marker to write the equation at the top and to draw on the number line at the bottom.
Two sets of practice problems are included, along with a blank version, if you want to make your own set. The first set concentrates on integer addition and the second set concentrates on integer subtraction.
