This products follows the explicit teaching model of I Do, We Do, You Do but it is slightly modified. I found in my inclusion 5th grade class, students benefit from a peer interactive component to the model. Therefore, my version contains a "You Two Do" just before they give it a try on their own. You will also see that in place of the I Do, I have two We Dos followed by a cut line. I have my students cut on the dotted lines and glue directly into their notebook. Then, we complete the We Dos together. You can provide them with a choice to either watch the first We Do or do it along with you.
I structure most of my math blocks in this format, and I have had much success. Depending on how students do on the Try It/You Do, they either work independently, with a partner, or in a teacher-led small group to work on the follow-up practice page for that day's skill. Teaching idea: hand out color cards as you check their You Dos on the spot. The color card will determine which group they are in for that day's practice. Color card meanings should change daily and be randomized so students never know exactly what each color means for the day! I can this "on the spot differentiation."
This particular product is on adding and subtracting mixed numbers. Students are given each problem within the context of a word problem so that they can immediately attach meaning to the numbers and build a conceptual understanding of the math behind the numbers. Enjoy! PDF file.
