Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators

Children like coloring pictures, so they do the task with great pleasure. A student should solve the problem and paint the ball with the correct answer in the color indicated on the right-hand side. The "extra" balls should be painted in gray. This form of work is interesting for children and makes teacher’s checkup easier. Use this worksheet as a quick assessment tool, or a homework assignment. The answers are included.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
