In this activity, students will engage in planning a trip to an aquarium and the cost associated with that trip. Students will be asked to estimate how much money they should take on the trip based on a school newsletter. Students will then be given actual menus and a gift shop flyer make exact calculations on how much money they will need to get everything that they want. Students will then be given a card with how much money their parents have sent with them. They must then adjust their spending to keep from going over budget. This activity is designed to promote higher order questioning and discussion in the classroom. In addition, this activity will develop number fluency and how to budget money in a contexts that elementary students are familiar with.
