This lesson and activity focus on students building conceptual understanding and procedural fluency of adding money. The idea of this investigation is that the students are grocery shopping, but they can only spend $1.00. Students are given a variety of food items (printed on sheets of paper) that cost different amounts of money. All of the food items are labeled with a price between 5 cents and 95 cents. Students will use the concept of adding up to 100 to add together the different items to try to make $1.00! This super fun lesson is sure to be a hit with your class!
