Do your students struggle with arithmetic with negatives?
Here is a game to get them practicing while also having fun!
There are 72 cards varying between adding, subtracting, and multiplying with negatives. Students shuffle the cards and divide them evenly. Just like the card game war, students will each throw down a card at the dame time. The player with the higher card wins and moves both cards to his/her stack.
If the two cards are of equal value, then it is war. Each player places one card face down and another face up.The player with the higher face up card wins all six cards and moves them to his/her stack. The first player to take all cards wins.
Students must be able to figure out the value of their cards by adding, subtracting, or multiplying. This can also be interesting when both players have a negative number, as they have to really think about which card is actually higher.
You can play by mixing the add/subtract cards with the multiplication or you can keep them separate.
