This is a simple game that can be used to reinforce knowledge of Find Ten addition basic facts. A Find Ten basic fact is an addition strategy where a number close to 10 is swapped for a 10 to make the computation easier and then the answer is fixed. Students choose 2 cards, one from each set. One card will show a number from 3-8 and the other card will show either +8 or +9. The 2 cards will form an addition fact. Students match the addition fact with a representation of the strategy they could use to solve it that involves a +10 instead of the +8 or +9. Students do not need to work out the total. They only need to match the new representation of the fact they created e.g. 9+6 would match 10+6 - 1. Students place one of their counters on the game-board space with the strategy that matches the addition formed by the cards they have chosen. They try to get 3 of their counters in a row to win the game.
