Description

This is a set of resources to help your first and second-grade math students apply The 8 Rule (adding 8) addition fact strategy. The activities are based on changing the addend 8 to 10, adding with 10, and then subtracting (or hopping back) 2 from the sum. This correlates with my Addition Fact Strategy Anchor Chart, The 8 Rule. As a prerequisite, your students need to be fluent with adding 10 to a single-digit number and counting back 2 from a given number. They should also be familiar with The 9 Rule (adding 9) addition fact strategy. There is a hands-on practice activity for changing the 8 to a 10 using equation cards (vertical and horizontal) and fun frog number cards. I have included color and black/ white options. The follow-up worksheets provide step-by-step practice with vertical and horizontal equations.

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
