Empower your students to master the Sums of Ten addition facts. Build long-term retention and fluency. Students progress through the concrete, representational, abstract stages of learning. Extra support and scaffolding for struggling learners.
Unlike other lessons that begin with concrete materials and jump to abstract worksheets, this pack offers materials that bridge the concrete and abstract stages of learning. The representational stage is the missing piece that many students need to abandon finger counting and adopt efficient thinking strategies.
Teach the Sums of Ten using a ten frame in whole group or small group. Great for intervention, tutoring, homeschool and homework. Not only do the activities support students, but also provide support for the instructor with visual models and sample language.

Sums of 10 Strategy:
Forming number relationships is a crucial element in number sense development. It is critical that students are very fluent with sums of ten. There are many subsequent math relationships that utilize ten as an anchor. For example, the Make a Ten higher addition facts decompose one addend to use ten as a bridge. 9 + 5 can be thought of as 10 + 4. Sums of ten may also be used when developing mental computation skills for larger quantities such as 78 + 6.
A ten frame is a graphic organizer to help students visually organize sums of ten. The goal is for students to form number relationships using visual memory rather than counting by ones.
When teaching math strategies, it is important to progress from concrete to representational to abstract. Fact mastery is a developmental process. The pacing of the activities will depend on your students. Stay at each stage as long as necessary. Do not progress too quickly through the activities. Remember that mathematical thinking develops at different rates for each student. Use the ten frame manipulation mat and tri-fold cards to scaffold support and differentiate instruction.
Although the activities do not need to be scripted, sample language is provided in the activities. It is important for the students to use mathematical language as they build their conceptual understanding of the strategy.
