'Addition Game' - Space Bump Addition Game is a fun Math lesson that encourages students to experiment with Addition strategies, makes learning social, visible and enjoyable. These number strategies addressed in this game are essential for efficient mental computations.

NB In my classrooms I do a lot of work on the need for efficiency in doing mental computations. We aim for, 'SEE IT, SAY IT'. This addition game offers heaps of opportunity to discuss 'efficient' number strategies.
Essence of the Game:
Two players throw 3 dice then add the sum of the dice to a multiple of ten. They place one of their counters on the answer to the algorithm produced. The game is ideal for practicing the mental strategies required to add 4 numbers together.
What You Need:
3 dice numbered 1 to 6
1 Space Bump Board
10 Counters per Player
Optional - 1 Dice Mat (Piece of A4 paper or piece of felt)
How to Play:
1. The student with the longest name goes first.
2. Player One throws the 3 dice onto the Dice Mat. (If any of the dice roll off the mat the throw is disallowed)
3. Player One finds the sum of the dice and mentally adds it to the number on the space ship. (NB it is a good idea to have Player 2 to check Player One's calculations for accuracy).
4. Player One places a counters on the planet with the same number as their answer.
5. Player Two repeats steps 2. through 4.
THE BUMP RULE
- If a number is covered by a single counter a player can 'BUMP' the counter off the board and replace it with theirs.
- A number is 'LOCKED IN' if a player has two of their counters on a number. ie The counter cannot be BUMPED.
How to Win:
The first player to use up all their counters wins the game.
- Have the students drop the dice onto a piece of A4 paper
or piece of felt to cut down noise. If a die goes off the mat
the turn is not counted.
Conduct Number Talks Before and After the Game.
A 'Number Talk' is a 5 to 15 minute class discussion which focuses on the efficient use of number strategies to solve problems. The teacher and students verbally communicate problem solving strategies to explore and expose the group to new ways of thinking. The talks serve to deepen mathematical understandings and develop computational fluency.
A Possible Number Talk Strategy:
Throw the dice and model solving the problem presented. NB The verbalizing of teacher self talk is very important eg 3 + 3 + 6 = I know in my mind 3+3=6 and then I know 6+6 is 12 so the answer has to be 12. Explain to a partner how you found the answer. ie Us the strategy 'Think, Pair Share'.
Base Number Talks on Observed Behaviors:
- when you see a lot of ‘Counting On’ to solve the dice numbers, encourage the practising of strategies because they are efficient. Model how efficient it is.
- bridge to ten
- facts to ten
- counting by 2s
- is there any need to say 'plus' when adding mentally eg if the dice show 3, 3 and 6, do you really need to say mentally 3+3+6?
