Students who are able to write their own word problems demonstrate understanding of the concept by applying what they have learned, a higher order thinking skill.
This set provides scaffolding for students who have difficulty coming up with vocabulary and ideas for writing word problems. Manipulatives are provided in the form of cowboys and cowgirls in groups of 1-10.
There are three separate activities in this pack: First, students can practice solving word problems with task cards #1-8, cowboy and cowgirl picture sets, and the recording sheet. Next, students can use the scaffolded word problems with the picture sets and What did Cowboys and Cowgirls do? page to create their own number sentences. Finally, students can use the picture sets along with the What did cowboys and cowgirls do? page to write their own word problems. Students may work on their own in a center, or with the teacher in small group for those who need help with reading.
