The set includes the following:
• 5 Addition & 5 Subtraction Word Problems for the sums 0-5
• Instruction sheet
According to the Kindergarten Common Core Operations & Algebraic Thinking (K.OA.A.2), students are to solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
In our class we introduce basic addition & subtraction for sums 0-5 during the first trimester once the students count, recognize and write the numbers 0-5.
The students need to understand that addition means putting things together or joining and subtraction means removal or taking one number away from another. They also need to recognize the symbols that represent addition and subtraction.
It is really important that the students understand these concepts before moving on and introducing word problems.
We teach our students to follow these steps when solving word problems:
Step 1- Read the entire word problem. Ask yourself what kind of a problem is this? (addition or subtraction)
Step 2- Reread and circle the numbers & clue words.
Step 3- Draw a picture to match the word problem.
Step 4- Write the number sentence that matches the word problem.
