using Pictorial Models, Number Lines and Equations (Two-Step)

Goal:
To understand addition and subtraction on a number line and relate it to other models of addition and subtraction.

Teacher Preparation:
Copy the student worksheet front to back.
Copy the center cards on cardstock, cut, laminate and bag.
Copy the center Student Response Sheet, if used.
Copy the mat on cardstock and laminate.

Directions:
Students will solve the word problems using pictorial models, number lines and equations.
Students will match the cards in a math center to match the pictorial models, number lines and equations. The cards can be self-checking by copying two-sided with picture on back, or copy one-sided and omit the pictures and have students complete the Student Response Sheet.
Students can use the mat in math centers or whole or teacher-led instruction to answer addition and subtraction problems provided by the teacher..
