This is a very fun activity that gets students solving addition and subtraction word problems, while having the opportunity to see if they can escape the jungle in time! All but two of the problems are multi-step problems that involve addition and subtraction with regrouping. Subtraction and regrouping across zeroes is also included. The problems would also work great with the strategy of bar modeling.
When students solve the first problem, the answer they get will “unlock” the next envelope. Students need to get the correct answers in order to progress in the correct order to catch the helicopter at the end of the escape.
I like to have my students work in small groups to solve the problems but this could be done in partners or individually. You have the option of making this a math center (and only making one or two sets) or having this be a whole group activity in which you complete the problems as a class, or you make as many sets as you have groups in your class.
The last task card contains a QR code that takes students to a Google Form in which they must type in their final answer to problem #12. If they answer the problem correctly they will get a message that they caught the helicopter on time!
Pictures are included with how to set up the activity. I have made it super simple to organize by creating labels for all of the envelopes you would need that you can print out on a label sticker sheet and by labeling each individual task card with where it should be placed. No gluing necessary!
My students loved this activity and I'm sure yours will too!
