### Description

This song uses the character and tune of "Miss Mary Mack" to create fun addition problems for students. Use the video to introduce problem solving, as an integral part of a problem-solving lesson, and for review. This song is designed to teach the following Common Core State Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

***Note that this is one small part of my 38-video Common Core 1st Grade Math Songs & Videos BUNDLE: Click HERE!

In addition to the streaming video on TpT, you'll also get:

2. Lyrics sheets so children can read along with the song, in reading groups or independently.
3. A template for students to create their own "Miss Mary Mack, Quack, Quack" books including a cover and a page with blanks for the numbers. Use for individual student books or a whole-class book.

I always tell my children to "learn something new every time you sing." Here are a few ways to use the song:

1. To promote comprehension and understanding of math skills, ask children to focus on the story and pictures. Asked what they noticed for a quick formative assessment, and to start a discussion based on their take-aways.
2. To promote fluency, phonics, and sight word reading, encourage children to focus on words. Ask what they noticed to initiate a language arts discussion.
3. Ask students to show the equations, e.g., 1 + 3, in different ways. They may show dots on a tens frame, number lines, the Commutative Property of Addition, etc.
5. Ask students to write their own "Miss Mary Mack" word problems. I've given you a template, but perhaps they want to change the main character's name and/or decide that she sees something other than ducks...puppies, kittens, or whatever interests your students!

I hope this song motivates, inspires, and teaches your students! Enjoy!
