Spend less time copying and dealing with massive amounts of paper by using journals instead of worksheets for word problems. With journals you can see how kids are progressing and have a record of their work right there in front of you every day. This is very helpful when you are assessing their strengths, needs and next steps. They are great to have when conferring with the students or with their parents.

You can use any type of journal or spiral notebook for these word problems. Once students understand how to use the journals, you can have them solve one or two word problems every morning when they come in. It's great practice for them and easy to manage for you!

Here is a blog post I wrote about these word problems called**Problem Solving Journals Rock!**

**Aligned with Common Core Standards:**

**2.OA.A.1**

Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

**3.OA.A.3**

Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

**3.OA.D.8**

Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

**4.OA.A.2**

Multiply or divide to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem, distinguishing multiplicative comparison from additive comparison.

**4.OA.A.3**

Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.
