In this unit you will find addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping. The format of the problems requires the students to think before they solve.
Due to the nature of state tests and benchmarks that make students identify when to regroup in a problem, this “think” step become essential to students. I can’t tell you how many curriculum resources I have that separate addition and subtraction. Teaching students to solve problems in isolation but not when there is are mixed operation problems in a problem. It also does not teach students that addition and subtraction work together.
The few activities provided in this unit will hopefully help break that misconception! There are teaching charts, worksheets, and a foldable activity for you to use with your students.
All of the activities require students to use addition as well as subtraction within the lessons. Some also require regrouping!
