This activity will support your students as they learn to add and subtract to 20 fluently. It will also help your students to develop their understanding of how addition and subtraction are related operations. You can use this activity to guide your students to develop strategies that allow them to add and subtract smaller and larger numbers through 100 accurately.
In this pack, there are 5 sheets of challenges for students to complete. On each sheet, students are asked to think of 5 or 6 addition and subtraction fact families that contain a specified number. For example, for the number “15”, students may write the fact family for the basic fact 7, 8, 15: 7+8=15, 8+7=15, 15-8=7, 15-7=8. You may also choose to challenge your students to write a fact family for related numbers that do not make a basic fact such as 12, 15, 27: 12+15=27, 15+12=27, 27-12=15, 27-15=12.
You can use this activity for whole class instruction, as a center, as reinforcement for students who need extra practice, or as an extension for students who need enrichment. Answer sheets have been provided with sample answers for each sheet.
Thank you for exploring this activity! I hope you and your students enjoy learning more about numbers and how they relate to each other! You can find this activity at my store - Mary Sunderland - located at: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mary-Sunderland.
