Are you tired of using timed addition and subtraction fact tests? Are you bored with your day-to-day math routines? If so, this bundled packet is for you!
In my classroom students begin each math workshop by sorting addition and subtraction facts. They have a laminated sorting mat (page 3) and a baggie full of facts (pages 4-14) that they pull out and begin sorting at the beginning of each workshop. I don’t give them all the fact cards at once; instead I gradually introduce the facts (i.e. first doubles, then combinations of 10, then plus 0, etc.). I also color code the facts so that students notice patterns.
Students typically have about five to ten minutes of sorting each day, Monday through Thursday. While students sort I meet with 4-5 students individually and “listen in” on them sorting. I record which facts they know “in a snap” (pages 15-18). On Fridays, students work on a district mandated traditional timed assessment.
I hope you find this bundle helpful. If you have questions or need something modified or changed please do not hesitate to email me. Happy sorting!
