Students will answer 5 questions in each section of this activity to earn squares in order to build their own house.
This is a spin-off of the popular MineCraft game and books that the students are so enthralled in now-a-days. There are four sections; Soil, Wood, Ore, and Diamond. Each section asks the students a different mathematical task. Just like in the game, soil is the easiest to dig, it is also the easiest type of problem.
Soil: two digit + two digit
two digit - two digit
Wood: three digit + three digit
Ore: three digit - three digit
Diamond: addition and subtraction word problems
Each question has a block with its answer on it. The students should solve the problem and find the block with the correct answer. When they have found the right block, they write which number problem it belongs to and may cut it out to use it to create their MindCrafting house. I gave out 8 X 11" paper for them to create their mansions on.
If students want more blocks they must answer more questions.
