This pack includes 28 mental math and hands-on addition and subtraction strategy Posters in multiple sizes!
The Common Core calls for students to be fluent in both addition and subtraction facts up to 20 by the end of first grade! In order to help students become fluent, it is important to teach them the addition and subtraction strategies they can use when solving an equation or a word problem. There are both hands-on addition and subtraction strategies as well as mental math addition and subtraction strategies.
Each poster in this Addition and Subtraction Strategy Pack include a picture and kid-friendly language to help students both understand and remember each of these strategies.
Addition and Subtraction Strategies are in full page, half page, and quarter page sizes to help teachers best utilize their classroom space. The quarter page addition and subtraction strategies can also be printed, cut, laminated and put on a ring to be kept back at your guided math table. Addition and subtraction strategy cards can also be given to students to be kept in their desks or at home and to take out when needed.

Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
