In this fun and cute activity students practice determining if a word problem is asking them to add or to subtract. Students will take turns drawing woodland animal cards. Each card has a word problem on it about one of the woodland animals. After reading the word problem students then determine if the problem is an addition or a subtraction problem. After sorting all of the cards into addition and subtraction problems students then get to choose 2 of each problem and solve them on the recording sheet. My students love the cute woodland animals and this activity helps them to identify keys words or phrases often seen in addition and subtraction problems. There are also extra blank cards for the teacher in case you want to write your own word problems.
