Addition and subtraction worksheets to accompany the book, "Ten Flashing Fireflies." Activities are centered around the number ten and its various combinations.
Teaching math is so much more than just teaching how numbers "add up." I think it is important that children understand how numbers relate to the 'real world." Using picture books as an explanation of working numbers is one of the better ways I've found to help my students relate to the world waiting for them. Picture books are fun, interesting, and ever engaging.
I believe that for almost every difficult concept, there is a picture book to help point the way. "Ten Flashing Fireflies" is one such book. It's a great book for counting, and for introducing and/or reinforcing the many facets of the number "ten." I created these activities and worksheets to accompany a terrific lesson from Marilyn Burns and Stephanie Sheffield's "Math and Literature (K-1)."
There is a firefly cutout activity with number sentences and both addition and subtraction worksheets --again with places for the answers and for number sentences. Extra fireflies are included as is a firefly coloring sheet.
