Pedagogy

Students are expected to develop fluency for adding within 20 (1.OA.C). Students are also expected in first grade to be able to represent and solve problems involving addition (1.OA.A), as well as understand and apply properties of operations to add (1.OA.B). The Addition with 20 Mystery Picture Squares activities will provide students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of these math standards.

How to use this product

This product can be used during whole group instruction, but is most commonly used for independent practice to demonstrate mastery of skills. Before using this activity, the teacher should determine whether or not to formally assess. If you choose to do so, you should be sure to prepare copies of your choice of the answer documents provided for students to record their answers/work.

Instructions for use:

1. Solve each problem. Have teacher or peer assess answers for accuracy.
2. Cut the sheet in half on the dashed line.
3. Cut out all Mystery Picture Squares (MPS).
4. Find the MPS that that corresponds to your answer in square 1 on the problem grid. Glue the MPS to that square on the gird.
5. Continue in this manner until all squares on the grid are filled and the Mystery Picture will be revealed.
6. Color the Mystery Picture to make it uniquely your own.

Super-Duper Easy!

This activity is engaging and easy to set up. Students will simply need a pencil to solve the problems, glue (preferably a glue stick), and crayons. The activity can be completed at student’s seat individually or in a small group setting.
