Help students practice and learn their addition and subtraction facts! Included in this product are 108 different fact family houses, 8 blank fact family houses, and a recording sheet (to be printed double sided). The fact families go up to 20.
Students will take the fact family houses and spread them out in front of them. They will then choose, at random, one house at a time. Students will look at the roof of the house in order to see what numbers belong to or live in that house. They will then come up with two addition and two subtraction facts using those numbers to write down on the house with a dry erase marker (if the houses are laminated). Students may skip this step and instead, or in addition to, record the numbers and their answers on the provided recording sheet.
Differentiate by providing students below and on grade level with more simple fact family houses (sums closer to 10), and students above grade level with more difficult fact family houses (sums closer to 20). Also, for more advanced students, they can work with the blank family houses in order to come up with their own numbers. Based on the numbers they choose, they will then come up with two addition and two subtraction facts to write down. They may record their numbers and facts on the provided recording sheet.
These fact family houses are meant to help students:
- practice and learn their addition and subtraction facts
- discover the commutative property of addition
- learn that addition and subtraction are opposite operators
- understand that a known addition/subtraction fact can be used to solve an unknown subtraction/addition fact
Printing the pages on card stock and then laminating is highly recommended as it will increase the durability and the longevity of the product. The pieces in this product may be stored in a Ziploc bag, envelope, or plastic container.
