Product Description
These tree identification tools were designed to complement a variety of Adopt-a-Tree activities that are readily available through Project Learning Tree and other on-line and book resources. Using common tree species found in the Carolina Piedmont region, these resources can be adapted for use throughout the USA. First, a PowerPoint presentation introduces students to simple and compound leaves as well as interesting leaf shapes showing the various common species. Then there is a “cheat sheet” ID handout they can carry with them outside. (For when you don’t have time to go through an entire dichotomous key.) Your middle school students will love going outside, even for 15 minutes, periodically throughout the year to observe and record the changes in their trees. If you choose to have them participate in an on-line citizen science project such as Nature’s Notebook or Project Budburst, they will need to know the species of tree they are observing. When March 14th rolls around, and you are celebrating Pi Day, students can use their math skills to determine the age of their particular tree with the growth chart included.
