Product Description
Advanced readers and writers benefit from authentic assessment and self-reflection, as well as opportunities to set future goals for themselves as scholars. We recommend that you use this final unit of literacy to support your advanced learners in constructing, refining, and presenting portfolios showcasing their growth as readers and writers. As you meet with your small group of advanced students, guide and model the portfolio completion process while providing a review of learning throughout the year by walking through past advanced learning targets, remembering shared reading using advanced texts, and rereading students’ advanced writing work. Students can use the provided checklist on page 2 of this document to help in constructing their portfolios. You may wish to have students build these portfolios using folders or three ring binders, or with a digital tool.

Assessing advanced learner literacy portfolios: The provided portfolio checklist requires advanced learners to consider the long term learning targets on the standards-based report card for advanced learners. These long-term learning targets have been modeled and reinforced through advanced differentiation in literacy, as well as the other content areas. The final literacy portfolios provide an ideal opportunity for this high level assessment, as well as a chance for students to become more familiar with these expectations for growth over time. In addition to determining how well the student has demonstrated each of the advanced learner long term learning targets, you can assess the work students have gathered for your core literacy learning targets. Descriptive and specific feedback provided through a written narrative or final reflective conferring session, in addition to your scoring on the final report card for quarter 4, is an excellent approach to authentic assessment for advanced learners. Use your conferring sessions to support students as they set goals for themselves as readers and writers for the future. The advanced learner long term learning targets assessed through these final portfolios are:
 Proves ideas with evidence
 Makes judgments using information
 Adapts, improves, or modifies objects or ideas
 Uses a research process and varied resources to investigate topics of interest
 Persists through a task when the answer doesn’t come quickly or easily
 Participates in a group as both a leader and contributing member
 Makes independent learning choices
 Notices and describes multiple perspectives
