Readers who struggle to decode letter-by-letter are often able to read successfully when taught to notice and read word parts. Training these readers to recognize word parts—such as “tion,” “ly,” “re,” “cious,” “ity,” etc. allows them to decode longer words successfully. Focused practice on a single word part provides the repetition necessary for struggling decoders to master that chunk.
This Advanced Decoding Task Booklet provides students practice reading and noticing the specific word part “-le,” as in the words “pickle” and “ripple.”
Readers are given the opportunity to read two words containing the word part, then highlight or circle the correct word. Students complete a page, then turn the page to see the answers on the back. They are able to self-correct immediately for timely feedback. A percentage chart allows students to look up and record percentages on back cover page—a bonus math experience. On the record page, they can record the number correct for each page and for the total booklet.
Ideas for use:
Staple together to create a task booklet (pages print in correct booklet order.)
Run off as separate task cards (practice page on front, matching answer page on back.)
Project the file for Whole-class discussion, practice, and modeling.
Seatwork practice—in booklet form or individual pages.
