This lesson is designed for advanced-level, adult ESL students as an opportunity to discuss current events articles.
One week before the lesson, please give students the downloaded handout, along with a printout of the article it is based on.
OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY'S WORD OF THE YEAR 2009: UNFRIEND - DISCUSS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WORDS AND DICTIONARIES
The lesson consists of a series of questions, starting with easier warm-up questions, then moving on to article-based questions, and finally challenging the students with general discussion questions.
It is most effective to put the students in pairs or small groups and frequently change partners. As students finish discussing questions, encourage them to share what they talked about with the class.
During the lesson, it is sometimes necessary for the teacher to first break down difficult questions into simpler ones.
