Product Description
This is the sixth of eight units that comprise the Advanced Grammar and Rhetoric course (feel free to download the free syllabus to get a better idea of the course content). The unit is written for a block schedule of 10 days but may be adjusted as the teacher sees fit for any length of class period. Using Kolln and Funk’s Understanding English Grammar as a text (available online for cheap!), students will work through Chapter 8 in this sixth unit and builds upon the diagramming and identifying skills established in Units 1-5. Chapter 8 explores lesser known and lesser used structures like absolute phrases and sentence appositives. Students begin with understanding simple sentence modifiers (adverbs, prep phrases, vocatives, interjections, participial phrases). The unit then explores correlative subordinators and strange combinations like “the-the” as a conjunction. This is followed by a study of new structures that are commonly underused as writers: elliptical clauses, absolute phrases, sentence appositives, and broad relative “which” clauses. In preparation for the SAT, students will also focus on punctuation rules with each of these structures and correcting dangling ellipticals. For fun, the unit ends with an exploration of unknown punctuation marks like the solidus and the interrobang. Also within the unit, students will complete Writing Asmt #6, a rhetorical analysis of two published article (comparison/contrast) as preparation for the “analysis” score on the SAT Essay. Writing #6 combines with Writing #5 (previous unit) to teach students how to write the SAT Essay. Included are the rubric, example article for class dissection, articles for the assignment, student essay examples, and edit sheet. Every unit includes a modeling exercise and an SAT vocabulary list. All concepts are assessed on a final unit quiz, which is the culminating assessment after a series of worksheets and a practice quiz. This is my favorite course to teach and is by far the most popular English elective in school. You are going to get kids to LOVE grammar. Answer keys are available, and you may always ask me questions as you progress through the unit. I want to help you be successful with this.
