PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This download is a PowerPoint and lesson plan explaining the methods of calculating distances to stars using parallax techniques. Also discussed are the various units of distance calculations, worked examples, calculations of absolute and apparent magnitude and a variety of slides with pictures of astronomical objects and their distances on them to give a sense of scale.

This is lesson 5 / 12 from my Astrophysics / Cosmology course, all available individually or as a bundle at a reduced price.

Apparent magnitude, m and absolute magnitude M as well as the formula linking the two

The Hipparcos scale.

Dimmest visible stars have a magnitude of 6.

Relation between brightness and apparent magnitude. Difference of 1 on magnitude scale is equal to an intensity ratio of 2.51.

Brightness is a subjective scale of measurement.
