Thank you for selecting Advanced Patterning Sample from North Star Teacher Resources. Common Core aligned, these language-free activities are perfect for learning centers and small group instruction. These pattern activities are designed to be taught after children have mastered basic repeating patterns (of colors, shapes, or small items that follow basic rules of single or double alternations, or alternations of intermediate complexity).
Scientific research shows substantial gains in both reading and mathematics are produced by instructing children on patterns. The evidence to date is that understanding advanced patterns has it’s effect through cognitive flexibility and working memory. Psychologists call these “executive functions” and they are probably central to children’s reasoning abilities. Cognitive flexibility is usually measured by a child’s ability to switch from one rule or principle to another, as the situation requires, instead of trying to apply the same method to every problem. If advanced patterning improves children’s cognitive flexibility and working memory, it is easy to see why children would have a better understanding of some of the lessons a teacher offers to her classroom.
In Advanced Patterning Sample, you will find the following types of patterns:
Random Missing End (activity 1)
Rotation (activity 2)
We suggest not only evaluating your students’ answers, but also why they chose the answers.
