Looking for a rigorous activity to teach real-world paycheck math skills? This activity ties together knowledge of employee benefits and taxes for students to calculate net pay. This activity requires students to compute gross pay, adjust for allowable deductions (health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, FSA, and retirement) and taxes to calculate net pay. This activity provides 3 scenarios for different individuals.

Print one set of Paycheck Math Scenarios for each group.
Print a copy of the Paycheck Math Worksheet for each student.
Model Emma’s scenario with the class.
Have students work in small groups or partners to complete Aria’s and Mason’s scenarios.
Close with a discussion of correct answers.
